Most trips start here, and it's easy to see why. Dal Lake, the houseboats, a slow shikara ride in the evening, it's calm without trying too hard. You'll probably spend a couple of days here before moving on to the rest of the valley.
Nishat, Shalimar, Chashme Shahi, all old, all still beautiful. Neat lawns, fountains, mountains sitting quietly in the background. It's not a rushed kind of place, you just walk through slowly and forget to check your phone for a bit.
Skip the touristy stuff for a bit and walk through the Old City instead. Narrow lanes, old wooden buildings, shops that have probably been there for decades. It's a completely different side of Srinagar, and honestly one of the more real parts of it.
This is where the trip gets a little more exciting, the gondola ride especially. Snow in winter, green meadows in summer, either way it tends to be the one place everyone remembers clearly after the trip's over.
Pahalgam is slower, quieter, rivers and pine trees everywhere. Good spot to just sit by the water or take a short pony ride if you're up for it. A lot of families end up liking this stop the most, no rush here at all.
Sonmarg means meadow of gold, and the name actually fits once you see it. Golden fields, glacier views in the distance, it's usually one of the last stops and a pretty good one to end things on.
