Katra is the base town where your Vaishno Devi trip actually begins. It has hotels, shops, and food stalls, and this is where you register for the yatra and rent ponies or palkis if needed. Most people spend a night here before starting the trek, so it's a good spot to rest and pack light.

Ban Ganga is one of the first stops on the trek, just a short walk from Katra. It's a small holy stream where many pilgrims stop to wash their feet or take a dip before continuing further. Locals believe the water here has a special connection to the goddess, which makes it a common stop for blessings.

Adhkuwari sits almost halfway on the trek and is a popular resting point. This is where the famous Garbh Joon cave is located, a narrow passage pilgrims can crawl through as part of the tradition. Many travelers take a short break here, grab some food, and refill water before moving ahead.

Sanjichat comes close to the end of the trek and gives one of the best views along the entire route. It also has a helipad, so travelers who book a helicopter ride land here before walking or taking a pony the last stretch to the Bhavan. The cooler air and open views make it a nice spot to catch your breath.

Mata Ka Bhavan is the main shrine and the real reason for the whole journey. This is where the holy cave with the three natural rock formations, believed to be the goddess herself, is located. The atmosphere here is peaceful yet lively, with pilgrims queuing patiently for darshan at any hour of the day or night.

Bhairon Temple is a small shrine a short distance from the main Bhavan, and many pilgrims visit it right after their darshan. As per tradition, the yatra is considered incomplete without a visit here. It's an easy walk or a short pony ride, and the temple offers lovely views of the surrounding hills.
Jammu is your starting point, known as the City of Temples. It has its own airport with regular flights from major cities, plus a railway station with good connectivity. Once you land or arrive by train, our team picks you up and takes care of the rest.
The walk from Katra to the temple is around 13 km and takes 4 to 5 hours. You’ll pass Adhkuwari for a quick rest and can also visit Baba Bhairon Nath Temple along the way. Ponies and palkis are available too, so it’s manageable at any pace.
If you’d rather skip the long walk, a helicopter ride gets you close to the temple in just minutes, darshan included. Morning slots are best since the weather stays clear. It’s a favourite with couples and anyone short on time.
After darshan, you head back down to Katra for the night. The next day, you’re dropped off at Jammu Airport for your onward flight, or you can stay back and explore a few more places nearby before wrapping up the trip.
The good news is that Vaishno Devi can be visited all year round, since the temple stays open every day. But the experience does change with the seasons, so here’s a quick month-by-month idea to help you plan.
Winter brings cold weather and sometimes light snow around Katra, which makes the trek a bit more scenic but also chilly. Crowds are thinner during these months, so it’s a good time if you prefer a quieter yatra without long queues.
The weather starts warming up and turns pleasant, making it one of the more comfortable times for the trek. This is also when many families plan their trip, so if you’re looking at a Vaishno Devi family tour package, these months work really well.
This is considered one of the best times to visit, with cool, pleasant weather and clear skies. It’s a lovely season for couples too, so many opt for a Vaishno Devi package for couple during this stretch, along with a relaxed walk and good photo weather.
The walk from Katra to the temple is the heart of the whole journey. It’s about 13 km through hills and fresh mountain air, with small shops and rest points along the way to keep you going.
At Adhkuwari, you can crawl through a narrow cave believed to be a sacred spot connected to the goddess. It’s a unique little experience that most pilgrims try at least once during the trek.
If walking the whole way feels tiring, ponies and palkis are available almost throughout the route. It’s a comfortable way to cover distance while still enjoying the views around you.
A short trip to Bhairon Temple after your main darshan is considered an important part of completing the yatra. The temple also offers lovely views of the surrounding hills.
Many pilgrims stop here early in the trek to wash up or take a quick dip in the holy stream. It’s a peaceful spot and a nice place to pause before continuing on.
Once you’re back at Katra, take a stroll through the local market. You’ll find food stalls, souvenir shops, and small eateries perfect for relaxing after a long day of walking.
Free food stalls, known as langars, are set up along the trek route by volunteers. Trying this simple, warm food is part of the whole yatra experience and gives you a break to rest.
